Richmond Rockets capture Spring Hockey Championship
The Richmond Rockets, a Novice Tier 5 team made up entirely of RMHA H3 players managed to win their tier in Playoff action last weekend at Excellent Ice in Cloverdale. The team of 7 and 8 year olds has combined for the first time this year after regular season action to play 3 on 3 Spring Hockey. They were very successful right from the start, going into the playoffs with a 6:2 record and only losing against local rivals the West Coast Warriors, made up of Seafair’s H3 players. Playoff action saw the team first win their pool with wins against the Cloverdale Rockets and the Chiefs , then move to the semi-final win against the Flyers. The final was played against the 99 Junior Islanders and was a tight game.
With the Rockets initially leading 6:1 early on in the first period, the Islanders managed to draw even again by the second period. The 3 period saw the Rockets come back in force, and with huge scoring from their power forwards Cameron Waisman, Tom Sweeney and Teddy Prior, the Rockets managed to hang on to the lead and in the end win decisively with a final score of 16:10. The Rockets also had great forward support from Craig Johnston, Kam Gill and Shawn Rana and solid defense provide by James Sings, Andrew Thiessen and Stephen Hohlweg. Goalie Bailey Lam had an outstanding game stopping four of five penalty shots. The team was coached by longtime RMHA coaches Pat Thiessen, Tom Johnston and Hari Gill. The team now goes into the summer break but after this year’s success, the Rocket are eager to try again next year!

Midget B1 Team Feeds Homeless
On Friday, January 18, the Richmond Midget B1 team didn’t spend a typical Friday evening like most other teens. Their evening was spent at the Salvation Army Harbour Light on Cordova Street serving dinner to homeless people.
However, you could ask any one of these hockey players after they had done it and every one of them would say it was something they would never forget. They were glad to be part of this experience and to make a difference in someone’s eyes. Joining the boys was head coach, Harbs Bains, assistant coach, Rob Garbo, and several other parents also made the trip downtown.
The volunteer coordinator for the Salvation Army, Kecia Fossen, had said “Our guests truly look forward to these meals every day. To have friendly volunteers assisting really helps to demonstrate how much our community cares. Thank you for your generosity.”
Coach Bains, a very innovative coach, wanted the players to understand how fortunate they were and also for them to realize how easy it could happen to anybody. Some of the homeless people spoke to the boys and said things like “stay in school”, and “don’t make the same mistakes we have”. Some of the people remembered when they played hockey when they were young and talking “hockey” made them want to reminisce. It was truly a win-win situation.
With Coach Bains, it’s not just about hockey; his players also volunteered at Christmas to paint windows at the Auto Mall, which was a big part of helping to raise $4,000 for families in need at that special time of year.
His team has done RMHA proud!!! The team consists of: Blake Kubeska, Alex Gold, Jesse Bigras, Riley Hass, Travis Quinn, Ryan McConaghy, Steven Thaker, Matt Richardson, Kevin McCrea, Alex Verhoeven, Jeremy Garbo, Josh Hertzman, Cameron McGowan, Aaron Merrick, Craig Walters, and Adam Chorney.
Congratulations to all RMHA Rep AAA and B1 teams!
RMHA would like to congratulate its Rep Teams on a fantastic performance so far in this season!
Congratulations to the Bantam B1 team, who will be going to Provincials over Spring Break!

Frozen Rose Melted by the Hitmen!
The PeeWee C2 Hitmen traveled to Portland in February to play in the Frozen Rose tournament and held off fierce competition from the American Northwest to win the big trophy. They were undefeated earning with their goalie Miguel Soler three shutouts. The final was frantic against a hard skating Portland Pirate team who were not used to losing; but lose they did by a margin of 8-4. It was a long drive there and back but well worth it in memories of hockey with hotel-mayhem for the kids and shopping for their parents. The American fans loved the Canadian game and the boys represented their association and country with dignity and fun.
Richmond Bantam B1’s going to Provincials
The Richmond Bantam B1’s continue their amazing run this year by adding a Provincial berth to their 2 tournament Golds and a second place finish in Tier 3 in regular season play, with decisive victories at the Final Four Championship. The Chiefs are now on their way to Provincials with the coaching staff of Norm MacAulay, Ron McIntyre and Bryan Downey. The Chiefs beat Langley 5-1, Ridge Meadows 4-2, and Surrey 4-1, to win the PCAHA Final Four banner this past weekend in Surrey.
Stellar goaltending by Allen Hoegler and Brad Sullivan gave the team the confidence to win. Outstanding defensive play was shown by Jonathan Bailey, Josh Bonnar, Trevor Bradley, Brandon Minhas and Tony Yang. Tremendous speed and tenacious fore-checking and scoring from forwards Dexter Allen, Matthew Bailey, Bryan Chiang, Jeremy Chiang, Troy Kaczynski, Chan Woo Lee, Brayden Low, Mark Pearlman and Matthew Yonin-Eldridge contributed to the win. Greatly missed from the line-up was Bryan MacAulay. Thanks to affiliate players Anthony Ast, Ryan Hait, Carter Popoff and Trevor Okino for stepping up and supporting the team.
The Hitmen are Bowen Bakken, Evan Braun, Ryan Carriere, Tyler Chan(A), Jeff Falkenberg, Aidan Fischer, Andrew Fleming(C), Shayne Hertzman, Jason Huber(A), Cole Johnston, Nick Mah(A), Cody Mattu, Miguel Soler(G), Stephen Watanabe(A) and Isaiah Yu(A). CONGRATULATIONS BANTAM B1 TEAM - Provincial CHAMPIONS!!
This was a great game with two very talented and high performing teams. Both teams worked very hard and you could see the strategy being worked on. They had the crowd involved from the moment the puck was dropped. Richmond Chiefs started the scoring at 16:13 and again at 13:15. Kelowna Jr Rockets answered back at 1:42 and 1:36 tieing the game and ending the period. The 2nd period had Richmond scoring at 19:24 and the rink got rocking when the penalty shot went in the net by Richmond at 12:53 and at 7:44 they scored another. Kelowna put one in the net at 6:59 and ended the 2nd. 5-3 the score is now. Back and forth in the 3rd with many chances. Kelowna pulled their goalie and with the extra man they put the puck in Richmond's net at 4:06 of the 3rd. Most of the play was around the Richmond net with a Richmond player trying every now and then to hit the open net. Kelowna tried hard but Richmond held them off and the 3rd period ending with the Silver and Gold Winners definitely decided. Great exciting game that both teams should be very pround of. Congratulations to the Winners - Richmond for the Gold and Kelowna for the Silver. Richmond was also the Fair Play Winners with 68 minutes in penalties through the Round Robin.
BANTAM HITMAN WIN RMHA TOURNEY
Richmond Bantam Hitman became the second Richmond team in a row to win the annual RMHA Spring Bantam/Midget Tournament.
The Hitman went 2 and 1 in round robin play with their only loss at the hands of Semiahmoo. They would go on to defeat Semiahmoo 3-2 in the quarter finals in overtime.
They defeated Coquitam 3-1 in the semi-final and then faced the Victoria Racquet Club in the final. The Hitman were just too much too handle for the Victoria squad and the Hitman skated away with a 6-0 win.
CONGRATULATIONS JUVENILE AAA1 TEAM - 3rd Place Finish in Provincials
The Juvenile AAA1 team capped off an incredible season, finishing in first place in Tier One, in PCAHA.
